Shortly after 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 12, 2010, 18-year-old Brigit L. Hippen of Hutchinson was arrested for Involuntary manslaughter for the death of her 3-month-old daughter. Her bond has been set at $25,000.
Formal charges were filed earlier in the day with the District Court. Assistant Reno County District Attorney Cheryl Allen has been assigned to handle the case.
The charge of involuntary manslaughter is a severity level 5 person felony and carries a sentence ranging from 31 months to 136 months in prison, depending on criminal history if any.
It is alleged that on February 23, 2010, Brigit Hippen unintentionally killed her 3-month-old daughter, Karina Perez, in a reckless manner. The child died from hyperthermia and thermal injuries which investigators believe were caused by a handheld blow dryer.
While it is understandable that the public may desire more specific information about this alleged crime, it is hoped the public will understand the need to balance the right to information with the alleged suspect’s rights to a fair trial.
The arrest of Brigit L. Hippen, and other released information, are based on mere accusations and she is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Law enforcement and the Reno County District Attorney’s Office cannot provide more information at this time.
