The Wichita City Council approves a plan to stop zebra mussels from clogging up the city's water piping.

Zebra mussels showed up at Cheney Reservoir more than a year ago. The tiny shell like creatures cause problems for the lake, but they also clog up the water filtration system for Wichita's drinking water.

The council gave the go ahead for staff to take bids on a $1.6 million copper ion system to keep the mussels from attaching themselves to the piping and reproducing.

The system should be in place sometime this fall.
