The Wichita City Council approved a tougher ordinance for scrap metal dealers, hoping to crack down on theft.

Wichita police say since 2000 the number of copper thefts has been on the rise. It slowed down with the price of copper dropping, but now the price is back up, so they expect the number of thefts to rise again.

The council voted 6-0 in favor of a new law that would help police stop thieves.
The law would require scrap metal sellers to show photo ID or give a thumbprint before exchanging the materials.

It would require sellers to pay sellers with checks for better tracking. The dealers will have to be licensed and they have to maintain records that will be open to police.
