A local community is in mourning after the tragic deaths of three-year-old Allessandra and her four-year-old sister Ashlynn Slaybaugh who were trapped in their burning home.

Neighbors, who thought of the girls as family, remember the little girls who moved to the area only a couple of years ago.

Sixteen-year-old Kendra Engstrand babysat for the sisters and spent time with them daily.

“I was like their big sister,” Kendra said.

The girls and their parents were taking a nap Monday afternoon when the father woke up to the smell of smoke. The girls’ father Kris says he tried in vain to reach the girls, but the flames and smoke prevented him from getting to their room.

The cause of the fire and the girls’ deaths remain under investigation.

“Right now we suspect that it was a malfunction of the furnace. That has not been absolutely determined yet,” said Chief Dave Williams, Mulvane Public Safety Director.
