A Kansas doctor convicted of unlawfully prescribing a painkiller to a woman he never met is asking a federal judge for more time to report to prison.

Dr. Lawrence Simons, of Goddard, was sentenced last month to two years in prison. He was ordered to surrender on Feb. 18 to begin serving his sentence.

In a motion filed Monday, a defense lawyer asked the judge to let Simons remain free until July 30 so he can place his children with their mother. He also wants more time to sell the family home to avoid foreclosure and help support his children while he's in prison.

Simons says liens from malpractice lawsuits against him are complicating the sale of his home.
