Emergency workers have confirmed two young girls have been killed in a house fire in Mulvane. Crews were called to the home in the 400 block of East Bridge at 12:40 p.m.

Mulvane's Mayor and Director of Public Safety said a couple in the home laid down to rest and were awakened by the smell of smoke. The couple told authorities they were unable to find their two small children, ages four and three, because of the thick smoke.

KAKE's Chris Frank spoke to the girls' father.

The man said he and his wife were taking a nap around noon when he woke up to what he thought was a scream. He then smelled smoke, woke his wife and sent her to the neighbor's house before trying to get to the room where the children were asleep.

He was unable to get to the childrens' room because of heavy smoke, so he tried using a fire extinguisher but could not get it to work.

The couple also has an 8-year-old who was at school at the time of the fire.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
