A fire broke out in a barn near Derby Friday afternoon but it was the fuel tank nearby that increased concern causing firefighters from Sedgwick County, McConnell Air Force Base and Rose Hill to converge on the scene.

Witnesses called 911 to report flames coming from the doors of a barn in the 9100 block of East 42nd Street about 12:30 p.m.

When firefighters arrived the 40 by 60 foot structure was fully involved. The nearby fuel tank caused firefighters to stand off and work defensively keeping flames from spreading beyond the barn.

No one was hurt and no animals were hurt in the fire. The barn housed heavy farm equipment and an estimated $550,000 in damage to the structure and contents.

No cause has yet been determined.
