Gov. Mark Parkinson ordered an early closing of state offices in Kansas' capital city Wednesday as a winter storm swept into the region.

Parkinson ordered state offices in Topeka and surrounding Shawnee County to close Wednesday at 3 p.m. -- about 90 minutes to two hours earlier than normal. He also shortened those offices' hours for Thursday, ordering them to be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Light snow edged into northeastern Kansas at midday Wednesday. The National Weather Service predicted total accumulations of 2 to 6 inches in Topeka and Lawrence by Wednesday night, when the storm was expected to taper off.

The region remains gripped by strong winds and bitter cold. Wind chills as low as 25 below zero were expected Thursday night in parts of northeast Kansas.
