University of Kansas officials say budget problems might prevent the university's national championship debate squad from competing against other top teams.

Kansas communications studies professor Robert Rowland has sent
a letter to former debate members saying the team could lose up to
$10,000 through upcoming reductions.

Rowland says the university's debate program continually places
in the top five of all schools. This year's squad is ranked fifth
nationally.

Debate coach Scott Harris says the team spends nearly all its
$100,000 budget on travel, which allows it to compete against
top-level talent. The school typically travels to 18 or 19
tournaments per year.
