A panel of Kansas lawmakers is floating two ideas to raise taxes to fund future transportation projects.

A legislative study committee agreed Monday to forward
information to lawmakers on methods for raising between $3.7
billion and $4.4 billion over 10 years.

The House and Senate open the 2010 session on Jan. 11.

No tax increase would take effect before January 2013, and the
study panel isn't specifying how the revenue would be spent.

One scenario would raise vehicle registration fees, cut the
motor fuels tax by 5 cents per gallon and apply the state's 5.3
percent sales tax to motor fuels. That combination would raise $4.4
billion.

The second idea involves a 7-cent increase in the motor fuels
tax, with future increases for inflation. Those steps would raise
$3.7 billion.
