A man suspected of killing 18-year-old Kelsey Smith after abducting her from a store parking lot made his first court appearance Thursday in the case.

Edwin Hall, looking tired and downcast, appeared in Johnson County Court via video feed from a jail in Gardner. He waived reading of the charges until he can hire his own attorney. His next appearance was scheduled for June 14th.

Johnson County District Attorney Phil Kline says he is consideriing seeking the death penalty. Kline says the death penalty is "on the table" if the case is tried in state or federal courts.

If convicted, Hall faces a minimum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the murder charge and more than 12 years for aggravated kidnapping.

Hall was arrested last night, hours after Smith's body was found near a lake in Grandview, Missouri. She was abducted from a Target parking lot in Overland Park on Saturday.
