Millions of people are on the move, heading home for the Thanksgiving holiday. Wednesday is the busiest travel day of the year.
This year 1.4% more people are traveling than last year, most of them using the highways.
Along the Kansas Turnpike the Farris family is fueling up. They're halfway through their trip from Colorado to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving.
"We're getting together with the family and we haven't seen the whole family in 10 year," said Julie Farris.
They are among more then 38 million Americans traveling 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. The number of Thanksgiving drivers up 2% from last year. AAA says steady gas prices are helping. But the Farris' don't feel too crowded out there.
"Actually it's been very nice. The traffic has been very smooth. The places it has been the craziest is right here at the gas stations," said Farris.
While the roads are busy, the airport is practically empty. Andrea Bush is flying to Boston for Thanksgiving. She didn't have to wait to check-in.
"It's really easy getting in," said Bush.
Only two million Americans are taking to the skies to get to their holiday destination. That's a decrease of nearly 7% from last year. Less capacity on planes is one of the reasons.
Nearly three million American are expected to travel by other means of transportation, including trains, boats and buses. That's a 1% increase from last year.
In Kansas, more than four million people will travel this holiday weekend.
