bankruptcy
Vanguard Airlines has suspended all flights for the immediate future, laid off all 1,100 of its workers, and is filing for bankruptcy protection.
The Kansas City-based discount carrier once served Wichita, and many people drive to Kansas City to take advantage of lower airfares.
Last month, Vanguard asked the government to guarantee $35 million of a $40 million-dollar loan. The airline hasn't received a decision on that request.
Vanguard has never had an annual profit, and its last quarterly profit was in 1998. Vanguard has been operating 32 flights a day from its Kansas City hub.
