Kansas is among a few states to enacted legislation cracking down on unwanted e-mail known as spam.

But some technology experts and state officials say something should be done at the federal level.

Kansas law requires e-mails promoting services to identify the sender and to include “opt-out” provisions. Violators could face a fine of as much as $10,000 per incident.

Senator Karin Brownlee views the legislation as a first step.

The Olathe Republican agrees with others who say there should be a federal law. Brownlee says that would make it easier for businesses to follow the rules.
