The 4th congressional district race in south central Kansas is already shaping up to be one of great interest for voters. The reason is simple. United States Representative Todd Tiahrt is running for the U.S. Senate.

That race creates an opening in the Kansas House without an incumbent running for the first time in decades. Already the republican side is crowded with five candidates and the democrats have a couple of their own.

The republican candidates include Dick Kelsey, Jean Schodorf, Wink Hartman, and Mike Pompeo. Another politician who had been encouraged to run in that race is state senator Susan Wagle of Wichita. Instead, at a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Wagle threw her support behind the candidacy of Pompeo.

Pompeo is counting on the support of conservatives in the 4th district but other republican candidates will also be courting the support of conservatives.

Even though we are a year away from the election we are sure to be hearing much more about the 4th district race right up until the very last ballot is cast.
