Poor somebody, not many jobs demand this kind of perfection, this level of performance. A plane pilot, a space shuttle commander, a ships captain, a train engineer, and a school bus driver all must perform to this level of competence. Yet a school bus driver is often disregarded as somebody who is not much of anybody. Just a little somebody but with a huge responsibility that affects everybody. Do the job well and sombody is everybody's friend. Do it poorly and somebody is everybody's focus for negligence. Please remember, millions of children are safely transported daily in this country by School Bus drivers, & you never hear of the succsses, have one mistake & it makes the front page. This is not to minimize any incident, drivers agonize over this cloud that hangs over their heads as they get up at o-dark thirty daily to take your children to school rain or shine. God bless you drivers, keep up the good work.

This was an unfortunate accident. I know this child and I'm very relieved to report he is doing alright. I know everyone has their opinions about the incident, but really, let's just leave the investigating to the police. I pray this kiddo will recover quickly, and I pray the bus driver is alright as well. This cannot be an easy thing for her to be going through either. Accidents happen, and fortunately, no one else was injured, and the kiddo is going to be alright. The driver did not maliciously go after this kid, it was an ACCIDENT. Let's leave it at that. We are not all investigators, so let's leave that job to the police. Thoughts and prayers to this child, as well as the bus driver.

That is exactly right Jeremy. Distractions come from all areas inside and outside the bus, and as a bus driver, me personally I have to be mindful of everything that is going on in and around the bus. It seems that the only time you hear anything about Durham or us drivers it's always negative. A bit of gratitude every now and again would be much appreciated. We transport your children as if they were our own, so in no way shape or form are we out there trying to hurt your children. This was a tragedy that this happend, but accidents do happen. News today, 2 men dead after accident at 63rd St South and Broadway. Yes most accidents can be prevented, but some of them end in tragedy and it doesn't do any good to point fingers. Next time you see a bus, think about what Jeremy said about what we go through on a daily basis, and have some sort of understanding what we go through.

As a driver for Durham, we go through extensive training to be safe and attentive drivers. There are those who choose to do their own thing while driving, and they are disciplined or let go if need be. We are under pressure to get up to 65 students home safely while navigating a 35 foot, 38,000 pound vehicle in traffic. We have to multitask by watching the students, the road ahead and on each side, lights, signs, other cars, side streets, pedestrians, etc... We have to watch out for EVERYONE ELSE while also watching out for ourselves. It is NOT an easy job, and we take considerable care to get the students to and from school safely. Many go through the training, only to quit after barely a week on the job because it takes so much intensity and concentration to focus on all the aspects of the job. Instead of complaining about us, why not respect us on the road, and teach your students to respect the rules on the bus. That would take care of 99% of the distractions.

It just goes to show to make sure to look both ways before crossing a street, as well as for the driver to be alert at all times, when driving a vehicle. Accidents happen and nobody is perfect. Driving a bus full of kids or even grown adults is greatly distracting. Maybe there should be improvements made inside the bus, at the driver's station, in order to keep distractions to a minimum; maybe a so called, "glass cockpit".

Our school bus drivers are under tremendous pressure and do a great job at handling it. This was a horrific accident and the blame game isnt going to prevent it from happening again or change the outcome of this. No one set out to intentionally behit by the bus OR run a child over. Lets all pray for the boy who is hurt for a full recovery and for the buss driver to find peace and stregnth. I cant imagine what either party is going through.

My husband just started driving for Durham this year, and let me tell you, they do through intense training to be able to drive those busses. Its not easy trying to negotiate a 35 foot bus through a crowded parking lot with kiddos everywhere. I am not saying that the driver is not at fault, none of us know that for sure, but it was a teenager that was hurt, don't you think that a veteran bus driver would have noted where all of the kids were before she took off? Give everyone a break, and let the authorities figure it all out. And please remember, these busses have a schedule to keep, and Durham is under a lot of pressure from USD 259 to keep the busses running on time. The schools get miffy when busses are late so the drivers are forced to drive agressively to get where they need to go on time.

I know that Durham has over 70 at my daughters school alone. Think of the number of buses and kids that they have! I think Durham does a great job. The ones that say they where run off the road should stop texting, eating, putting on makeup, and trying to pass in the median. you are also the ones speeding on I-35 and Kellogg because you don't know how to leave earlier for work!!

I have to admit I'm concerned for the children that ride the school buses. I don't have any kids of school age yet, but I have seen enough from the bus drivers in our town to make me want to drive my child to school when she becomes of age. They drive too fast and never pay attention to the people around them. Watch out for pedestrians, pets, and other vehicles. Where are these bus drivers getting their licenses anyways? A cracker jack box? I have called and complained many times to the bus services in our town and they don't do anything about it. Let's talk about the buses get the kids home safely..you have got to be kidding me! SLOW IT DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION! Here's your next story KAKE...film the bus drivers and talk about student safety! Investigate! I do want to give my condolenses to the poor kid that was run over by the bus. Maybe next time the bus driver will look twice before pulling out.

I'm praying for this young man, his family, the bus driver, their family and all the people who were there to witness this. This is a horrible thing to have to go through from any angle. That being said, I was just about hit by a school bus at the turn about today in Delano. I don't know what company. I also know that durham drivers were working at Franklin the last two years, and they constantly were running stop signs. This does NOT mean that all bus drivers are irresponsible and wreckless, it just means that we all need to be mindful of our surroundings, slow it down a bit, and start calling these things in, like another poster said. I've also been in situations where I was glad to be in the hands of several Durham bus drivers, because if not, I'd have been severely injured, so it really does go both directions.

I used to attend Southeast high school && my sister goes there now. She was riding the bus that hit that kid. && the bus driver my bus driver a few years back. People who are complaining about school bus drivers driving can just quit now. You have a problem with it pick up your phone && call it in. I don't see some of you getting up EVERY school day to take your child to school. && she is a great driver, she was the nicest bus driver i think i've ever had. As for that kid...i don't know if you've ever been to southeast when school gets out but its 3 schools getting let out at ONCE. It's crazy! && there are kids running all over the place, students have told me that they saw the kid run out in front of the bus. Otherwise the bus driver would have seen him, she is a very cautious driver, she would have seen him if he was just casually walking up && even as a student i know better then to just cross in front of a bus of that size. I look up at the driver first make sure they see me && giv

Okay, the lady that drives the bus is my old bus driver, she is so sweet && was pretty much crying she didn't mean for it to happen, but things do happen. && from what i heard from fellow students the kid RAN out in front of the bus, && the bus is high up && near impossible to see anything besides the road in front of you. She is a wonderful bus driver && she shouldn't have been suspended. That would be the same like you getting in a wreck even though it wasn't you fault the other person dying, && you getting your license suspended, seriously, wtf?
