HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- Elementary students in Hutchinson collected $700 to help a northeast Kansas school that was gutted by fire last month.
Youngsters at Union Valley Elementary School launched "Change for Change," to raise money for books, computers and other supplies lost in the fire March 10th. They collected $697.55.
But that's not all.
The donation is among nearly 400 from schools, businesses and
individuals that have given more than $46,000 to help Seneca Elementary School.
The blaze destroyed much of the 69-year-old building, which
housed 275 students in grades kindergarten through eight. Damage
was estimated at more than $5 million, and investigators don't believe the blaze was arson.
Authorities said junior high students will attend classes at the high school for the rest of the academic year. Elementary students will go to classes at other locations, including an American Legion building, the basement of a dentist's office, a former restaurant and the town's library.
