The serial killer who terrorized Wichita for years is causing new fears. Police now say it appears the BTK Strangler is back in Wichita. Police don’t know where the BTK Strangler has been or when he will strike next, but they hope to catch him.
Police confirm they believe a letter mailed to the Wichita Eagle last week is from the BTK Strangler. The letter was mailed from a Wichita post office, leaving police with just one possibility – the killer is somewhere in Wichita.
Inside the envelope was a photographed copy of Vicki Wegerle’s drivers license along with copied photographs of Wegerle's body after she was murdered.
Wegerle was killed in September of 1986 in the 2400 block of West 13th Street. At the time, investigators did not publicly link Wegerle’s homicide to the BTK Strangler. Before this recent letter, the last confirmed communication from the BTK Strangler was in the late 1970's.
This new information is prompting police to reexamine other unsolved homicides to find any possible connection. Investigators with the KBI and FBI are assisting with the case.
After 25 years of silence, investigators are now racing the clock to collect and reevaluate evidence. Evidence will be sent to laboratories for fingerprinting and biological testing. Investigators are doing everything they can do to catch Wichita's most notorious serial killer before he takes another life.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to report it immediately. You can call a tip line at 316-263-0138. You can also email information to www.coldcase@wichita.gov or mail information to cold case, PO Box 9202, Wichita, KS 67277-0202. You can remain anonymous.
