3-19-07 - A Wichita-area man says his cat died of kidney failure just one week before a massive pet food recall was issued. Menu Foods recalled dozens of brands of cat and dog food manufactured at an Emporia plant, after at least ten dogs and cats died of kidney failure.
Aaron Fisher says his cat Speedy was a perfectly healthy 4-year-old until he ate one of the bags of contaminated cat food - Special Kitty. Within days he was dead from kidney failure.
Dr. Teresa Burks of the Andover Medical Clinic treated Speedy and says his symptoms match up with the reasons for the recall. Fisher saved the food and says it matches the recalled batch numbers. In his case, the food was purchased at the Wal-Mart on Rock Road.
The recall covers dozens of brands of "cuts and gravy" dog and cat food. That includes store brands as well as name brands like Iams and Eukanuba. All were made by the Menu Foods Company in Emporia.
Fisher says he will wait and see before he decides to pursue legal action.
Customers can contact Menu Foods at 1-866-895-2708. A list of the recalled brands and lot numbers can be found at the company's website.
