Tuesday night's special election on a resolution proposed by the Liberal, Kansas school board has apparently failed.

The unofficial election results came in with 888 votes against and 803 votes for the capital outlay resolution--a difference of only 85 votes.

The request by the school board for more taxpayer money became a hotly contested local issue when opponents of the resolution raised questions regarding expenditures on the district's USD 480 credit cards.

The scrutiny to travel expenses turned up charges for meals, hotels and taxi rides that sparked debate on local blogs.

Liberal resident Steve Helm started the 1,040 signature petition that forced the special election, according to The Southwest Times.
