Disaster has happened before in the Wichita area. In 1965, a KC-135 crashed in a northeast Wichita neighborhood.
Today on a ball field near Haysville, McConnell Air Force Base along with other emergency agencies held an accident response exercise to sharpen the skills of emergency response teams during rescue operations.
The exercise simulated an off-base mass casualty accident. In addition to McConnell AFB participation, local participants included Sedgwick County Emergency Management, Fire Department and Sheriff's Department, Haysville Police Department, Via Christi, Wesley Medical Center, Robert Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita Fire Department, Red Cross, Salvation Army and others.
The exercise took place at the Plagens-Carpenter Ball Fields in Haysville, on 63rd Street South, between Broadway and Seneca.
These exercises are needed when multiple agencies are forced to work together during times of mass disaster and are conducted across the U.S. as metropolitan areas prepare for worst-case scenarios.
