3-2-07 - The Wichita Police Department is hoping embarrassment works as a deterrent for prostitution. The WPD unveiled a new webpage on Friday that shows the name and photos of people arrested for prostitution related crimes.
“The Wichita Police Department has worked diligently to reduce prostitution,” said Captain Felecia Norris, commander of the Patrol North Bureau. “A number of solutions have been tried, including designating certain parts of the city Anti-Prostitution Emphasis Areas. While some of these have reduced prostitution, many prostitutes and their customers have moved to other parts of the city.”
Norris said the new webpage will be expanded at a later time to include all of Wichita.
“Photos of people arrested in connection with prostitution-related offenses will be posted on the Wichita Police Department website for 30 days,” said Norris. “Once they have gone through the judicial system and are convicted, their photos will be posted for another 30 days. In addition, we will post photos of individuals for whom a warrant for a prostitution-related offense has been issued. That photo and warrant information will remain on the website until they are apprehended.”
“WPD will continue to operate ‘stings’ against prostitutes and their ‘johns’, said Norris.
“The crime of prostitution directly affects the quality of life in our community. The Wichita Police Department will continue to do everything possible to reduce prostitution and make Wichita more safe and secure,” she added.
