The Local Option Budget, or LOB, is about to go up 25 percent. Its funding will come from an increase to your property taxes.

This increase comes at a time when state funding is already in trouble, but, if the LOB is not raised, school funding will have to be cut back.

Superintendent Winston Brooks hard at work on the budget. He says the LOB seems to be a popular idea. So far, no serious protests have been filed in opposition.

With a tight budget and cuts already on the way, that money couldn't have come at a better time for Wichita kids.

Even with the LOB, the district will still have to cut about $2 million. They are trying to keep the cuts as far away from the classroom as possible. In fact, they've already cut about a million dollars from the administrative level.

Brooks says the LOB is coming at an ideal time, as lawmakers are already talking about cutting next year’s school budget.
