State regulators are preparing to take public comment on a western Kansas utility's request to raise electric rates.

Hays-based Mid-Kansas Electric Co. is seeking an average 11.7
percent rate increase for 54,000 customers. The increase would
generate $16.4 million a year for the company, which says it needs the additional revenue to keep pace with its operating costs.

The Kansas Corporation Commission scheduled a hearing to take public comment Wednesday night in Liberal, with video hookups from sites in Clyde, Dighton, Dodge City and Ellsworth.

The KCC plans an additional hearing on technical issues Nov. 23 in Topeka. Regulators have until next February to rule on the request.
