Three months ago, we went to Elkhart, KS, where many townspeople rallied together to help a family in need.

Vicki Myers lost both her legs in January after a long bout with diabetes. When I interviewed her in early June, several members of the community were swarming the Myers home, endlessly working to add on a handicap-accessible bedroom and bathroom.

Now, after just one summer of people donating their money and volunteering their time, the Myers home has gone from project to prominence. The gorgeous two room addition will allow Vicki to move effortlessly throughout her own home.

Last weekend, a banquet was held to celebrate the completion of the Myers home. The Elkhart community raised $25,000 to help Vicki, her husband Tom, and their daughter Jess.

The "me-first" mentality may be widespread throughout the nation, but it's places like Elkhart that let you know old-fashioned values, like helping out a neighbor, still exist.
