Special Election To Be Held In Liberal

In a back-and-forth debate between the residents of Liberal and the school board, a special election will determine the outcome.

A recent petition-drive by residents that opposed tax increases forced the Liberal Board of Education to schedule the election, set for October 13th. In July, the board approved a tax levy that would generate $750,000, with the possibility of doubling that in future years.

The money would go towards things such as computer technology, band equipment, and various repairs. If voters reject the tax levy, it would cause the district to look elsewhere for revenue.

KDOT Hears Public's Opinion On Hwy 83

The Kansas Department of Transportation has a better idea of how to proceed with a major highway after a series of meetings this week.

KDOT presented some possible alternatives for improving US Hwy 83 from Sublette to Scott City to area communities. Meetings for public officials and community members were held to answer questions and to take comments on the various options.

Officials say the meetings contributed a lot to the highway's future plan. KDOT will prepare a series of proposed projects for review later this fall, and a final report will be released in the spring.

REO Speedwagon To Perform In Garden City

The midwest rock band, REO Speedwagon, will invade Garden City this weekend.

Saturday night, the group will perform at the Finney County Fairgrounds. Opening act, Bipolar Echo will take the stage around 8 pm, with REO Speedwagon coming on at 9 pm. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Mosaic in Garden City.
