Court documents filed in Kansas City say two drug companies knew a pharmacist may have been diluting drugs as early as 1998.

The papers were filed by lawyers for patients who received drugs from pharmacist Robert Courtney.

The papers say Eli Lilly and Bristol Myers-Squibb knew about the potential tampering and failed to contact authorities.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
