Ann and Kent Pottorf drove from Garden City to Wichita to see the last three B-1 bombers take off from McConnell Air Force Base. "It's a symbol of American strength to me, just impressive,” Ann Pottorf said.
The B-1s will go to bases in Texas and South Dakota, to be replaced by KC-135 tankers. For those members of the Kansas Air Guard who played a part in maintaining and flying the bombers, a piece of them also leaves.
"You work on something for seven or eight years, you get a sense of ownership and you hate to see it leave after all those years," Technical Sgt. Sonny Mosier said.
