Cowley County residents are still reeling over the news that a 15-year-old boy is accused of shooting a woman at her home in the middle of the night this week. That boy is now charged with attempted murder.

This news seemingly hits small town folks a lot harder although these types of incidents happen more often in more populated areas. But now, Angela Krepps' family just wants to say thank you.

"I know there's no way we could say thank you to everybody," said Leslynn Moore. "It's deeply appreciated."

Investigators combed through the Krepps property southwest of Cambridge in Cowley County Wednesday. The story is an amazing one of survival. Angela Krepps hears suspicious noises in the middle of the night. She goes to the back door carrying a shotgun, but as soon as she opened the door, she was shot... twice.

"It's very humbling how people have come forward," said Kimberly Moore. "The support is definitely small town support and love. Caring and pitching in and doing what needs to be done."

Evidence at the scene and tips to police led them to a 15-year-old boy. He was arrested Thursday and was charged Friday with one count of attempted first degree murder and a count of aggravated burglary for another case.

"August 21 is the next status conference date," said Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith after the hearing. "At that time, we should have some information that will allow us to make further decisions on how this case is going to proceed and what the direction of the prosecution is going to be."

Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom Friday and KAKE News is not identifying the boy, but Krepps' family told us after the hearing that Angela's son wanted to clarify something after hearing on the news that he was 8 years-old.

"Braden made the comment... He says, I don't feel like I'm a hero, but I am 9-years-old not 8."

That little 9-year-old boy called his father at work when this happened Wednesday saying "mommy is hurt" and he needed to come home immediately. The family now says Braden is doing fine and is just happy to have "mommy" home again.

Leslynn Moore says Angela Krepps will likely have to undergo reconstructive surgery on her face because of the damage the small caliber bullet did. She was also shot in the chest, but is now recovering at home.
