A group of veterans who were opposed to placing a memorial to South Vietnamese soldiers in Wichita's veteran's park met Sunday in Mulvane. The purpose of the meeting was to go over a proposal to offer the Wichita City Council that would keep both groups, the veterans and the Vietnamese, happy.
The veterans group wants the park to remain dedicated only to US Military soldiers and branches.
The end result of Sunday's meeting, according to Kansas Veterans Action Committee Spokesperson John Wilson, was that most everyone agreed they would rather have had the City Council place the proposed Vietnamese memorial on another piece land. But Wilson says the group accomplished what they set out to do by keeping Veterans Memorial Park unique to the US Armed Forces.
At the end of the meeting, the group overwhelmingly supported the proposal that would be offered to the city council at their meeting later this week.
"And so I will indicate to the city manager's office tomorrow that, as the
last hold out, we will endorse the agreement and the City Council will be
advised that all representatives involved on both sides of this issue, the
Veterans and the Vietnamese communities have unanimously agreed to the proposed agreement," Wilson said.
The city manager is expected to recommend that the City Council accept the agreement as is in the Tuesday City Council meeting on July 21,2009.
