A Kansas war veteran gets some help getting around town. ''Cars for Heroes'' surprised the former soldier with a new set of wheels.
It's a patriotic drive onto the middle of the field at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. During a special presentation before the Wingnuts game Monday, Jon Lesh becomes the proud new owner of a Toyota.
"Thank you. I really appreciate it," Lesh told the crowd.
Lesh is an Iraq War veteran. Because of a health condition he had to retire. Because of the bad economy he and his family struggle financially. They had to buy an old clunker that barely worked just to get to work.
Then the group "Cars for Heroes" heard his story. And that's what led him to the stadium Monday night.
"It's awesome. it really means a lot," said Lesh. "Everyday driving my car lately has been I get home at night and I'm glad I got home and it didn't die. I probably put as much oil as gas in it."
This is one of 100 cars "Cars for Heroes" will give out all over the mid-west this summer.
"I've got the greatest job in the world," said the "Car Santa".
The "Car Santa" started a non--profit that first started giving donated vehicles to the less fortunate three years ago in Wichita. Then stories of veterans in need came pouring in and they decided to change their focus for the next few months.
It is a huge honor for Lesh who can't wait to to get his new ride out on the road.
"It's going to be strange but I'm sure I'll get used to it pretty quick," said Lesh.
