The 4th of July weekend nearly turned tragic for one Wichita family. They were hosting a party in the 10800 block of West Blake Cir. when they noticed a toddler face down in the swimming pool.

Sedgwick County EMS Captain Mike Buchanan says the first rescuers arrived to find the child was breathing, but it was obvious he had taken in some water.

"There was quite a bit of family around and the toddler had a life jacket on," Buchanan said. "But he apparently got face down and one of the family members got him out immediately."

Buchanan credits the quick action of the family members for saving the boy's life.

He was transported to a hospital in critical, but stable condition, so the importance of watching children and knowing CPR really helped out in this case, Buchanan said.
