Letters sent from a California attorney are triggering outrage and frustration in Kansas as residents here find themselves falling victim to a possible new scam.
The Better Business Bureau says it is receiving more reports involving attorneys threatening legal action if the consumer doesn't settle an old account in default and racking up interest, even if the account was paid off years ago, or never existed at all.
Adam Sechrist recently received a letter from an attorney in California representing the out of state debt collection agency, Regent Asset Management Solutions.
The letter claimed to stem from a defaulted checking account and threatened legal action if Sechrist didn't pay.
He says, he had settled the account last summer through a different company, but Regent couldn't explain why he received the letter.
KAKE News found multiple postings on Internet message boards from people going through the same thing. They had been contacted by the same attorney with the same story.
Like Sechrist, they say they refused to pay without proof.
After several hours of phone calls and a lot of hassle, Sechrist finally was able to get in touch with the collection agency he worked with last year. They confirmed that there was no outstanding balance.
They also confirmed that he was not the only one who had called to complain about this possible scam.
