A local town is now the focus of a Vatican investigation. A representative of the Pope looks into what some are calling a genuine miracle.
An investigator traveled to Colwich looking for proof that prayers saved the life of a local pole vaulter last year. 20 year-old Chase Kear is now back in fighting form after a severe brain injury left him at death's door.
Getting back to normal, he says, feels good. "Really good. It's good to be able to get out and hang out."
Just nine months ago, doctors never thought Chase would be here. During pole vaulting practice at Hutchinson Community College he landed on his head. He was in a coma and doctors said he would die.
Not only did he wake up, but friends and family welcomed him home after only a two month hospital stay. Doctors were amazed.
"He was doing things they never thought he would," said his father Paul.
And his rapid recovery also caught the attention of the Catholic Church.
While Chase was in the hospital, constant prayers were directed up to Father Emil Kapaun, who was a local priest. The prayers asked him to save Chase.
The Vatican is in the middle of a canonization process to see if Kapaun should be named a saint. They only need to prove he is responsible for one more miracle. They think Chase may be it and he agrees.
"I'm here now and I was supposed to be dead. I'm here now and I believe he had something to do with that," said Chase.
The investigator is in Kansas to talk to Kear and his doctors to get more information. Even if the church decides Chase's recovery was not a miracle, his family will still always believe.
"There was a sign in the hospital that said miracles happen and that stuck with me the whole time because miracles can happen and they do happen and now we have one," said Paul Kear.
It could be awhile for the church to decide if Chase's story is in fact a miracle. It has already been working for years on the canonization of Kapaun.
