A man who held police at bay for seven hours at a Hutchinson law firm has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Thirty-one-year-old Nathan Cunningham was sentenced Tuesday in Reno County Court.

Cunningham entered the law office of David Holmes Feb. 19 and held five people — including his estranged wife — hostage. The hostages were allowed to leave or escaped but Cunningham stayed in the building another seven hours.

He eventually left the building after police used tear gas.

Cunningham was also ordered to pay more than $56,000 restitution for damage to the office.
