Emergency crews in Butler County are investigating the apparent drowning of 47-year-old Jamie Martinez of Wichita at a pond in the 300 block of NW River Valley Rd. near Towanda.

Sheriff Craig Murphy said Martinez had been taken to Susan B. Allen hospital in El Dorado in extremely critical condition. Butler Co. 911 Dispatchers say the man died at the hospital.

Murphy says the man, a 13 year-old boy, and another individual, all family members, were fishing on the bank of a pond on their property when the 47-year-old male went into the water for unknown reasons.

When the man did not come out of the water the 13-year-old become concerned and called 911.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene at around 8:30 p.m. and were able to locate the man submerged in the water. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
