A north Kansas firefighter has died, apparently succumbing to the heat while battling a house fire.

Kansas State Firefighter Association Secretary Steve Hirsch said Osborne County firefighter Lyle Lewis died Tuesday after responding to a fire at a farm home four miles southwest of Alton.

Hirsch said the 50-year-old Lewis reported he needed to cool off after his second entry into the home. He was then transported to Osborne County Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Temperatures during the day reached more than 90 degrees. Firefighters from Stockton and Woodston also helped with the fire.

Lewis' funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Osborne High School.
