Larned will be losing about 90 jobs on Sept. 30 when St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and its long-term care unit close.

The operator of the hospital, Central Kansas Medical Center in
Great Bend, says the hospital has significant financial losses
because of low patient volume.

Sharon Lind, CEO of Central Kansas Medical Center, says the
long-term care unit had only 18 of the 30 beds filled. And the
hospital serves an average of only three overnight patients a day.

The employees have been offered retention bonuses to remain
until the hospital closes.

A family medicine clinic operated by the hospital in Larned will
remain open and may expand its services.
