The four Republican candidates for governor
voiced sharply different opinions tonight about budget issues.
The four candidates participated in a forum televised by WIBW-TV
State Treasurer Tim Shallenburger repeated his promise not to
increase taxes if elected governor, even in the face of the state's
ongoing budget problems.
Wichita Mayor Bob Knight agreed the state has to exercise fiscal
discipline but wouldn't pledge to avoid a tax increase. Instead he
says he would protect education and vital services.
Senate President Dave Kerr also said he would protect those same
important services. He then added that he does not believe the
state is spending enough money on public schools.
And Dan Bloom says he would push for an increase in the state's
property tax levy for schools.
