A local toddler fell down a well in his own yard in May of 1999, setting off a nearly six hour rescue. The partially dug well in his back yard was 16 feet deep and Jessy Krauss was stuck.

Lowell Ester is a fire captain for the Mulvane Fire Department. But in ’99, he was working construction in the neighborhood. He heard the emergency call on his scanner and was one of the first on the scene.

Numerous emergency responders from city and county fire departments, as well as Lowell Ester, pitched in to help. Vulcan Chemical provided a camera used in wells to monitor Jessy while rescuers worked.

Warm air was pumped into the well to keep Jessy warm.

There was great relief when 17-month-old Jessy Krauss was finally lifted to safety that night.

Jessy is 11 years old now. His grandmother on his mother’s side says he’s living with his dad in the Norwich area.

Workers filled in the hole the night of the accident. Now, there’s no sign a well was ever there.
