It would be a huge mistake to close the north unit in ElDorado. I too would like to see the figures as to how opening up another facility that has been closed and moving the inmates and employees would save the state money. If this "solution" the state has come up with is true then why not show us the difference in cost and then give Butler county the option of making up the difference to keep our honor camp open. The state is still going to have to pay the guards that are relocating to the main unit and the state will need to hire people to work around the lake and do upkeep at the STATE LAKE. That means salaries and health insurance and what ever else state employees receive. Oh, and what about the new State employees that need to be hired to run the newly reopened facility. looks to me like it might end up being more expensive in the long run. Just give us the figures so that we can see how this is going to work

closing the north unit is detremental to the community of el dorado. there will be no prairie port, no veterans reunion no reason to even go to el dorado. this is a stupid decision and not well thought out but typical of the way kansas appropriates its funds. i am very disappointed.

Is the State going to hire workers for upkeep at the lake? What about the mowing and upkeep the North Unit inmates have been doing outside the prison east of El dorado, who is going to do that? the list of what these men do is long and is a valuable asset to El Dorado and Butler county. How is it cheaper to reopen another unit that has been closed for so long when this one is already operating? I would like an explanation as to how this is going to save money. One of the ways the State could generate more tax income is by lowering boat taxes to be more competetive with our neighboring states. In doing so, more people would register there boats here instead of elsewhere. We pay $460.00 a year on our 1996 boat here in kansas. If we registered our boat in one of our neighboring states it would be under $50.00 a year. I know for a fact that alot of people register out of state and save thousands of dollars in doing so. In lowering taxes on watercraft Kansas would generate more tax money.

I am really disapointed to hear that the Honor Camp is closing. I am from ElDorado and how much good this facility has done for the community as well as rehabilitation of the inmates. It is too bad there could not be an alternative solution found for cutting the budget. It always seems the good and useful programs seems to be the first to go.

The north unit is a good unit and good for ElDorado. If they would make rehab for all the people they put in prison for drug and alcohol offenses then they would have the room to keep the truly violent & sex predators locked up. Our country locks up more of their citizens than any other country.

The North facility has been around for more than 20 years. We should fight to keep it open, most of the inmates there do not belong behind the prison wall. Yes, they do deserve to do their time but the overcrowding in the main prisons are overwhelming, The inmates at the North Unit are saving the community money by working at the lake and in the El Dorado area. The inmates that will be shipped out of the N.Unit will just add to the overcrowding in the main prisons, There must be another way to cut back. I do not think closing this is an option, the community needs to come forward and express concerns.

in the past we have heard how the prison system is overloaded and we need new prisons, so why are we closing them down? If you move them to another prison the state will still have the expense of their upkeep. Maybe we should put the prisoners to work and let them pay for some of the expense. Have them cleaning ditches, parks and cleaning state vehicles. They could do something to generate money or put them in camps like Arizona does, make the prison so they do not want to come back.

Why is it that when someone does something wrong, they are so quick to blame the police and law enforcement officers? I believe the police are just enforcing the law that is handed down to them, isn't that right? Our society has the mindset that a person has no responsibility for his actions and should never have to suffer the consequences. The issue with most violators, is that their parents didn't enforce any rules when they were growing up and now our society is suffering from it. That's also why we are in the financial crisis we're in. NO RESPONSIBILITY!

I hope the Beancounters in Topeka are happy. By closing the "North Unit" they are sounding a death knell not only for the Unit, but also for the Veterans Reunion and Prairie Port festivities in El Dorado. Maybe the KS National Guard will come help these worthy events; Oops, the Guard is covering for the US Army in IRAQ! My Bad!

I say bring home the inmates in other states!!! that would save money!! And besides there are some inmates in prison for non violent and drug related crimes...Cant there be something done differently with them...like release and put on parole?

April it looks like you have used your time out to educate yourself on things like propper grammar, the laws, the court process, collecting evidence, interview and interrogation etc. Oh wait, that was me.... I am sure your nephew is just as innocent as can be. Pull your head out.

This isn't about the police April and if your nephew hadn't broken the law he wouldn't be where he is now! This is going to hurt El Dorado having this facility close down. Not only do they help out at the El Dorado lake, but they help out in El Dorado. Praire Port Festival you'll see them in the concession and booths as well as walking around picking up the trash.

There are so many people in prison that dont belong there just like my nephew. that why there is no room for any inmates maybe if the police would do there rigt there would be less inmats in prison
