The El Dorado Correctional Facility will
close its minimum security North Unit by July 1 because of budgets
cuts.
Corrections Department Secretary Roger Werholtz said Tuesday the
agency must cut $6 million in the fiscal year 2010 budget. He said
closing the unit will save $1.2 million and the 102 inmates will be
transferred to other locations.
The department is in the process of placing inmates at several
facilities, which has resulted in overcrowding in some places.
Werholtz said a unit at Winfield Correctional Facility will be
reopened within several weeks, adding 176 beds for minimum security
inmates to offset overcrowding.
Employees at the El Dorado North Unit will go to the facility's
Central Unit.
There are 8,031 male inmates in the system.
