Saturday evening, Wilson County Emergency responders were called to the scene of an apparent drowning at Middle Dam near Neodesha on Fall River. An unidentified man, who was with a group of three other people, reportedly fell into the water at about 7 pm.

Personnel from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department, Neodesha Police and Fire, Fredonia Fire, and Wilson County Rural Fire searched the river unsuccessfully Saturday evening. The regional swift water rescue unit from Chanute was also called in. The search was temporarily suspended once it became too dark to search any further. The search resumed early Sunday with additional assistance from the KS State Department of Parks and Wildlife. As of 5 pm Sunday afternoon, no body has been recovered.

According to Wilson County Sheriff Dan Bath, search efforts have been hampered by the high and fast-moving water in the river, which is much higher than normal because of the recent heavy rainfall. The gates at Fall River Reservoir were closed at about 10 pm Saturday evening, but he says it can take 24 hours or more to affect the water level that far downstream.
