Heavy rains throughout KAKEland forcing a number of highways and city streets to close, creating detours for motorists.

Wichita motorists are being detoured around 21st and Amidon, due to high water washing away the river bank at the bridge.

Sedgwick County emergency dispatchers also closed Eerie at Morris, and 1st street from Emporia to Rock Island, near downtown Wichita.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority is also urging motorists to avoid using the Turnpike near Wellington. Officials say water is currently over the roadway near milepost 14, about five miles south of Wellington. Authorities are not allowing any vehicles smaller than semis to travel through the area.

Northbound drivers are urged to exit at South Haven, travel east on US-166 to Arkansas City, turn north on US-77 to Winfield, west on US-160 to Wellington, back onto the Turnpike.

Southbound drivers should exit at Wellington, travel east on US-160 to Winfield, south on US-77 to Arkansas City, west on US-166 to South Haven, returning to the Turnpike.
