A 54-year-old man is behind bars, for one of Wichita's latest homicides.
54-year-old Harvey Baker made his first court appearance today, for the stabbing death of Larry Thompson. Thompson died last week. His death was one of four homicides in the city in a seven-day time span.
Those homicides have quickly pushed Wichita's homicide rate closer to one of it's highest levels in years.
In 1999, there were 14 murders in the first six months of the year.
In 2000 there were 16 murders in the first half of the year. Last year, there were 10 in the first six months.
And so far this year, there have been 13. Wichita Police say they can't explain the recent rash of homicides.
Captain Nelson Mosley says, "Tthey just all happen to have happened in a week, and it has been extremely taxing on my department getting out there and dealing with different things."
Police have made arrests in three of the homicides. Investigators are still looking for a suspect in the death of Lucille Gallegos. She was found decapitated last week at a west Wichita apartment complex.
