Family members have identified a man killed by a wildfire Wednesday. Shawn Gose of Winfield died in the Cowley County fire.

Ranchers were burning pasture land west of Dexter when the fire got out of control. The two men tried to outrun reported 20 foot high flames but it appears their pickup got stuck in fencing and the fire overtook them. Gose was trapped inside the truck. The other man is listed in fair condition at a Wichita hospital.

Conditions through the day had been nearly good for burning. When this fire started, the wind was under 15 miles an hour.

"I don't know if the winds switched or what happened, but it got away from them and that's when they had the trouble," said Winfield Fire Chief Curtis Wilson.

In all, more than 1000 acres burned. More than 40 firefighters from around Cowley and Sumner Counties helped in the effort.
