I think the "Big picture" is missing here. We, who are "supposed" to be the goverment are trying to get smokers to quit because it's bad for them and to raise some bucks to help our citizens that have not been for one reason or another not as fourtionate as others. Yes we do need money to help LEGAL citizens. Try helping LEGAL citizens with schooling and and health care and watch the billions pile up for us. Instead smokers are being targeted to cover the cost of greedy industries hiring illegal aliens for proft and sloppy goverment allowing it, look at the billions american lose every year and they look to the smoker for help? My Momma would slap the he!! out of me for thinking like that

this rise in tobbaco is going to turn around and affect the citizens heavely they should have thought this tax out a little better the cost of living is at a all time high now this do they know just how many smokers there are that all live struggling everyday already to make ends meet and i think they need to bee informed that tobbaco addiction is as hard to quit as heroin,or cocain and they have clinics all over the us for that so they need to help the smokers out to

I'm not sure what to think about this tax hike I am a smoker and on a budget I agreed to the no smoking in businesses but this tax hike a not be a good idea cause if people live next to a state that has no tax they might go to that state to buy their cigarettes... But I do understand the health care costs, doesn't Washington State have enough taxes and tax hikes???

And to all the WELFARE HATERS This system was working well as what it is supposed to be A TRANSITIONAL HELP before Bush scraped the welfare to work program which HELPED WOMEN BECOME SELF SUFFICIANT AND STAY OFF WELFARE. Welfare isnt the proplem it's the mentality of SOME of the people on welfare that needs to be adjusted.

I am a smoke & why the heck should I have to pay for some else's kids??? I chose not have kids & I still have to pay for them. Quit pezzing them out if you can't pay for them. I sick & tired of every bodies excuses why they can't work. I have had a steady job since 1983 & have NEVER gotten a hand out. Maybe I need to get knocked up so I can get FREE health care.

Well, if you want to do it, you're gonna pay for it! It's like anything else if you want to go to a movie, you are going to pay whatever the cost. If smoking is that important to you, PAY THE COST AND SHUT UP ABOUT IT! No one is forcing anyone to put those NASTY CANCER sticks in your mouths! And sure enough people on welfare are gonna keep smoking, and celebrities are still gonna be spending $50,000 for a purse! When you got the $$$ in your hand, You are gonna do what you want with it. I personally prefer to eat, and pay the bills, but that's just me....

Well they've done it again. Alot of those on the welfare roll are smokers and do you think this will cause them to give up their smoking? Nope, just means less for the kids because the parents will fund their habit one way or another!! Danged if you do, danged if you don't.

OK. As a smoker (hoping to quit) I can see both sides to the issue. It's unfair to target a specific group for taxation, but at the same time, smokers cause a drain on the health care system that is unnecessary. For me, this is actually more motivation to quit. But we need to see this for the 2 base problems that exist. 1) targeting taxation to single out a group, and 2) That smoking is an addiction that needs to be treated as such and focus placed on helping the smoker quit the habit. We should never target a specific group for taxation since that causes a variable tax revenue flow and is a violation of rights by singling out a group...smokers just being the example here. As far as the addiction, it's getting easier to quit these days with so few places to smoke and the costs. That is helping me. Continue with the restrictions and quit smoking support and we can succeed. Lets all work to fix the problem folks.

To NASTY Anonymous : I smoke and have a right to pursue happiness. I only hope that the people who brought this tax on tobacco products, can see the light and tax the hell out of Beer, Wine, liquor, as well as fast food, country club memberships. I hope you wake up and find your Mc'ds meal that cost $4.59 is now $29.59,, and your wine now cost $124.99 a bottle. If you do good people who think they have all the answers and you could READ then you would know that the Legislation is not for poor people's health care it is for the CHILDREN. (SCHIP) The State Children's Health Insurance Program. All that is happening is the creation of a black market for tobacco products, and the tax on the poor to support it and the Rich don't get a tax increase for 2 years. It needs to be fair for everyone Rich,Poor, and every member of the US. Let's work on real problems of Drunk Drivers, Rape, Robbery, Murder, ect. But I don't guess you or we have that problem here in Wichita? At least I put my name did U?
