Wichita police have taken four children into protective custody due to living conditions.

Around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to a disturbance call near Pawnee and Broadway. When they arrived, they found a car with one adult and four kids. Officers say the backseat of the car had been removed.

The officers then decided to check the family's home near Central and Grove. Inside they found trash everywhere, no food and several animals that weren't being cared for.

The children, an 8-year-old girl and 3 boys aged 9, 12 and 13, were also covered in bug bites. Officers then decided to take the children into police protective custody.

The kids' 33-year-old mother was not arrested, and the police department along with the Kansas Department of Children and Families are working with her to get the house into a liveable condition.
