An eastern Kansas man charged with 172 misdemeanor cockfighting counts has entered into a diversion agreement with authorities.
Charges against Murillo Fernando Tapia of Eudora will be dropped if he meets terms of the agreement with Johnson County authorities signed Wednesday. He was directed to pay $45,000 to cover the county's investigation costs.
The 37-year-old Tapia and another man were arrested in June 2008 at a farm about eight miles west of Olathe. Authorities say they found more than 170 fighting roosters and a large sum of cash while executing a search warrant.
The second man, 50-year-old Juan Carlos Rodriguez-Machain, is scheduled to go to trial in April on the same 172 charges as well as one count of obstruction.
