You probably know which doctors you can go to when you're sick. But do you know which hospital your insurance covers?
A lot of people don't, and many end up at the wrong hospital.
Some people don't know they have to go to a specific hospital. Others get confused because their benefits change. Either way, if you go to the wrong hospital it could really cost you.
Kathy Unruh is recovering from a heart attack she suffered two weeks ago.
Kathy says, "Without thinking we got up and went to Wesley."
Kathy got the care she needed. But because of a change in her benefits, her insurance doesn't cover Wesley Medical Center.
Kathy says, "When you're in a situation like that you don't stop and think my insurance doesn't cover this hospital we gotta go to this hospital."
Wesley Patient Care Coordinator Paula Cook says, "For some patients it might be a few thousand, for others it could be tens of thousands of dollars that they're responsible for."
After she was stabilized, Kathy finished her care at Via Christi St. Francis, the hospital her insurance covers. She doesn't know what she'll have to pay for her mistake. But she knows it won't happen again.
You should check your benefits package now, so you're not responsible for a big bill for going to the wrong hospital later.
